Program Guidelines

Cause 4Paws Gary, INC has designed this program is to help reduce pet over-population  of dogs and cats in the City of Gary by providing residents with affordable, responsible pet ownership services to reduce overpopulation, and provide temporary pet food support .  The target group is those who are suffering from an adverse financial hardship, or are receiving assistance from the following agencies:

  • Major VA Disability
  • SSI/SSI Disability
  • Unemployment
  • EBT Food Stamp Assistance
  • Public School Free Lunch Program
  • Energy Assistance
  • Section 8 Housing. 

Participants must have a valid State issued photo ID that application address. 

All pets in the guardian's care must be spayed or neutered, vaccinated and micro-chipped to qualify for pet food support.  No pet will be left unaltered, or unvaccinated in the household.  We want  to stop unwanted litters,the spread of disease,and  reduce the number of animals suffering in our community.  We want to make sure that No Pet is Left Behind due to the lack of affordable resources.

Spay/Neuter Assistance:  

Owned pets: We are an approved assist group for the SNSI (Spay,Neuter Services of Indiana)  through this program we help Indiana residents apply for a $25.00 Spay/Neuter voucher.

*You Must be receiving benefits from the above listed assistance programs

The following vaccines are required for surgery


  • Rabies
  • Distemper/parvo
  • Bordetella

Cats   Rabies

VACCINES AND E-COLLARS ARE ADDITIONAL TO THE $25.00 VOUCHER. Guardians can choose to vaccinate their pet own their own prior to the surgery or at the time of surgery.  If the Guardian chooses to have the pet(s) vaccinated at the time of surgery, the vaccination fees must be pre-paid prior to scheduling.


Street Cats:   $40.00

Offers rental of humane traps, or assistance from the Guardian to trap members of the colony.  Spay/neuter, ear-tip, rabies vaccine, pain medication, and return to base camp.  


Cause 4Paws Gary offers pet food assistance to qualified low-income residents in need. We offer dog food, cat food and cat litter.  This is an available service to assure that the family pet has high quality nutrition for their daily sustainability.  Enrollees must apply each month that the service is needed. Every pet in the household must be spayed/neutered/vaccinated or enrolled in our program to receive services to remain in compliance.  . Cat owners in need of cat litter will be required to purchase a re-fillable litter pail from Cause 4Paws Gary.  There is a one-time fee of $7.00 for the pail.  It may be refilled each month at no additional charge.

Resident must be enrolled in our programs to help bring them in compliance.

We will need a copy of each pet's vet  records (booklets are NOT accepted)  in the household ON FILE to distribute supplies.

Only the applicant can pick up requested pet supplies

We DO NOT offer delivery service.

Residents may NOT add new animals to their food request. Exception: pregnant females

If the resident has a pregnant female in their care, they must indicate that information during the application process.

Pet Food services will be discontinued for Feral (Street Cat) Guardians that allows a managed colony to de-stabilize.

The pantry is not in a position to feed littering animals, as works against our goal to stop pet overpopulation in the City of Gary, and surrounding communities.

Any participant that pre-registers for pet food, but fails to show up at least two consecutive months will be restricted from future registrations.  They may apply in-person if there are supplies available at the time. 

The Gary Pet Food Pantry is designed to be a temporary support system for pet parents in need.  It is NOT designed to sustain animals for duration of their life

Emergency Medical  Care: 

Medical assistance funding is available for owned pets on a limited basis to assist with emergency surgeries, and cancer cases.  Subject to availability.  Does not cover routine vaccinations,x-rays,bloodwork,and grooming.  Funding may cover a portion of the office visit at a pre-approved veterinarian for a diagnosis or second opinion.  There is no guarantee that services will be approved.  Payment is made directly to the vet's office.  Funding can not be used to reimburse a pet owner.
